Install Pictures

I finished my install in about an hour. It came out very good. I have to wait until tomorrow due a test ride. I converted an old trek verve 1 to a 1 x 11 drive training and the NXS fixed the shifting issues I was having in the middle of the cassette.

So far my only suggestion for improvement is the USB C port cover. The cover is a bit flimsy and pops out

Hi Toby,
Thanks for posting the pictures, we really appreciate that. Regarding the USB cover, we agree. Its going to be improved on the next production batch. FYI, the USB is actually completely waterproof without the cover, but you definitely want to use it to keep dirt out.

Test Ride Update:

I did an 11 mile test ride and I’m very impressed with the functionality for the cost. This bike started as a mixed bag of parts from my other bike upgrades. It started out with a 3 x 7 Shimano (low budget) drivetrain and cable actuated disc brakes. I upgrade it to SRAM AXS e-tap and hydraulic brakes when I switched to a 1 x drivetrain but had a lot of problems with getting SRAM AXS adjusted properly in the center of the cassette. Unfortunately SRAM’s tuning of the AXS e-tap is pretty much the same as adjusting the cable tension screw (small position adjustments, if moved too much affects alignment in other areas of the cassette) on a cable actuated system. NXS fixed all the problems with its simple setup. I manual set the center position of the smallest cog and the ceter position of the largest cog, then everything else fell in place…smooth shifting in every gear.

These are some of the Pros and CONs I encountered during my test ride.

PROs:

  1. No button play on the shifter pod.

  2. No shifting delay or interference noticed.

  3. No missed shifts.

  4. Smooth shifting under load (I used a budget SRAM APEX rear derailleur).

  5. Fast multi-shifting when you hold the shift buttons. NIce to have (but no deal breaker) a way to adjust how many shifts it makes.

CONS:

  1. Not really a CON but more of a question. I swap components around fairly often, is there an economical way to replace the cable for the NXS shifter if it gets frayed or stretched over time?

* This is just a simple review based on my experience with NXS and SRAM AXS e-tap and in no way and endorsement of one product over the other.

Hi Toby, thanks for the detailed report. As for the multi shift speed, we are going to be adding some setting in the app to adjust both the delay when it starts, and the time between shifts.

Regarding the cable, Its just a standard, 1mm cable. Don’t use a brake cable, as the diameter is too large. The cables are very cheap, so maybe we’ll put them up on our Shop page soon, so customers can buy them. Do be very careful about frayed cables, its possible to jam up the motor if it breaks in there.

You did get a bit lucky on getting all gears to work perfect first time. Usually you need to tune a few of them. Did you try using the shifting buttons to tune yet? That is one of the most convenient features – you can adjust the gears on the fly while riding without even looking.

I didn’t need to do anything after the initial manual adjustment via the app, it worked perfectly the first time which was very surprising.

The reason is pretty simple. It depends if the shift points are linear. The motor calculates the shift points in between high and low linear. Most Shimano derailleurs tend to have linear shift points. SRAM tends to be more stretched out. (Longer distance between shift points on the large cog). But maybe the new AXS are more linear.

And this is the reason why NXS can “rejuvanate” a derailleur. When they get worn, they no longer have consistent shift points, and same with the index shifter, they get worn. That is why on an older bike, you have trouble shifting. Sometimes even a new bike its not perfect. With NXS you can fine tune each point precisely, and adjust as it wears out.
